Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
