The Iconic Game Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe United the Gap Between Rock Generations

It has been two decades after Guitar Hero debuted across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the tools to feel like a rock star. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing someone who has nailed the epic lengthy guitar solo in front of a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the display synchronized to a song. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, creating the feel of a genuine live show.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise which made a remarkable impact on numerous musicians included, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the songs – even though initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song because the cost was so high,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to be in.”

He adds: “One of the remarkable aspects was the number of parents reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers how the series revived classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a bigger, new demographic. Generally this had been seen as outdated material, but then once it got featured on the game and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it was cool. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated label. It gave all our music a new life.”

At that time, the band's debut album was still unreleased in the US, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the group as they went on US tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles Enduring Impact

Music's heavyweight names soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and related stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly earned the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It moved more than 500,000 copies in its first week, while sales of their songs rose of up to 40% during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. This track is challenging even in the hardest setting, let alone performed at double speed and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a successful tour when their hit was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that our selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the track was used in a trailer for a major film. “Previously I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has a unique path in music and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

Most installments were released in just a half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring spin-offs such as the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus on peripherals died down, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the community alive, and there’s expectations of something from the original publisher in development. A new studio has entered work on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following Guitar Hero?

“We thought those games might become similar to sports games where you can releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to continue with new generations.”
