One can find numerous candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that title should go to a mechanised sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately ten lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, which converted logs to boards using almost no manual labor, the Dutch could construct vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch naval, financial and artistic dominance across the continent and the world.
The First True Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial true industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. One component converted the rotary movement into vertical action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the rotary movement into a sideway’s motion advancing the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Every component was modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine them so the machine operated in a precisely synchronized order, cutting with each descending motion and advancing on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of basic parts.”
