At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
